VIGIL: Justice for Victims of Police Killings: Vigil and March
Tuesday, October 22nd:30pm until 8:30pm
480 rue Gilford, métro Laurier (sortie St-Joseph)
Family-friendly; welcome to all! Rain or shine.
Please get in touch about any accessibility needs
The families of people killed by the police, along with their friends and their allies, are organizing the fourth annual commemorative vigil to remember those who have lost their lives at the hands of the police. These families, who face an uphill battle in uncovering the truth and obtaining justice for their loved ones, need our support.
The purpose of the march is to:REMEMBER the victims who lost their lives to police violence and abuse; and SUPPORT their families in any way we can.
In Montreal, there have been more than 60 people killed by the police since 1987. This includes the killings of Mario Hamel and Patrick Limoges (June 7, 2011) and Farshad Mohammadi (January 6, 2012). This past summer Robert Hénault, 70, was shot inside his small Plateau apartment and died of his injuries on August 8.
This year, we also support all those who have survived police beatings. This includes Didier Berry who was beaten and hospitalized by Montreal police on October 24, 2012, as well as Norbert Mestenapeo, a young Innu father who was brutally beaten by Sûreté du Québec police on July 16, 2013 in the community of Unamen Shipu on the North Shore.

CONVERSATION: Older, Aggressive and On the Prowl
Wednesday, October 23rd, 7:00pm until 9:00pm
LA CENTRALE galerie Powerhouse, 4296 boulevard Saint-Laurent
Considering the term was invented less than twenty years ago, the Cougar has entered our cultural imagination in a big way. From renowned celebrity cougars like Demi Moore and Kim Cattrell, to reality shows like Extreme Cougars, to countless references in music, movies and TV, it’s clear that, as a society, we are fascinated by these sexually-charged older women. Who is the real person behind this stereotype and why does she fascinate us so? Where do our judgments about her, be they positive or negative, come from? Why do we point, stare, applaud or laugh? What makes us feel entitled to make comments and pass judgment? Is she just asking for it? This public conversation considers our long-standing practice of categorizing and dismissing older women and seeks to better understand our current obsession with the cougar. Why does her choice of clothing matter to us? Why do we care who she sleeps with? More significantly, beyond extreme visibility or invisibility, can we make a space for older female sexuality in our society?

YOGA: Anti-oppressive Community Yoga!
Wednesday, October 23rd, 8:30pm
Le Milieu, 1251 rue Robin
*Queer and Trans* friendly*
*Body positive*
*Welcome to people of all colours, ethnicities, religions and (sub-)cultural backgrounds*
*Bilingual*
*Non-gendered bathrooms or language*
*Come 15 minutes early if you have any special concerns or just want to chat*
-Mission-
Our aim is to make yoga more physically, emotionally, financially, and psychologically accessible by providing services that are both drop-in and pay what you can, in non-judgmental and anti-oppressive environments across Montréal.
Our aspiration is that by reaching out to more people, we can share our passion that yoga is a powerful way to connect our minds, our bodies and our spirits. We hope that in building more inclusive and thoughtful yoga communities, people will carry those principles and practices into their homes, neighborhoods, and movements.
*What to bring. Since these classes won't be happening in a yoga studio, please bring some things to replace the regular props:
- A yoga mat, or a large towel
- A blanket or bath towel
- A throw cushion or pillow
- Water!. Le Milieu has a tap (obvs), but since we'll be doing a lot of detoxifying breath work, it's good to bring extra water to cleanse your body
- Some cash, if you can, to support the service and this fantastic co-op that offers a free community space for artists, kids and everyone in between!

A founding father of the Montreal Electronic music scene, he's well versed in a variety of musical styles, and is the driving force behind 'Dance Jam', as well as a resident DJ for Interchill Records. Louis-Philippe (DJ EOKA) will offer a musical kaleidoscope that magically blends together with precision and color. His style is an ethno-fusion-electro-groove that also mixes with House, swing, and unclassifiable sparkling gems, prized for their different rhythms that dancer spirits love! Gabrielle Cloutier. Solo singer in Zaia and Quidam, Cirque du Soleil! Gabrielle is known as ‘The voice of Mother Earth, and the voice of the Angels’. PARTY: MONTREAL QUEER SLOWDANCE!
Friday, October 25, 9:30pm until 3:00am
The Wiggle Room, 3874 St. Laurent
You are cordially invited to ♥ MONTREAL QUEER SLOWDANCE! ♥
With a lending library of designated dancers for all you wallflowers, and a dancecard-booklet to set up dances in advance (should you choose to), Montreal Slowdance Night has all slow songs, all night long! (Except for the occasional intermission when we play the fastest songs we can find!)
It's high school with a happy ending. Come and experience why slow is beautiful, and why love is not ironic. Fabulous and inspired attire, while desired, is not required. But would be AWESOME & HAWT.
Straights are totally welcome at this event. This event is open to everyone. We are trying to alternate monthly between queer and straight. I know that sounds weird. Segregationist. But it's been our experience that queers and straights prefer having separate slowdances, and we are just trying to accomodate that. Everyone is, however, welcome at either.
We are always looking for designated dancers for our evenings. If you are outgoing, warm, and willing to undertake the very serious duty and responsibility of inviting wallflowers out onto the dancefloor - if in fact, such a prospect gives you great joy - then please contact the organizers at inconsolablecat@hotmail.com.
PLEASE NOTE that this event is friendly to everyone. What this means is that you may be asked to dance by someone of the same, opposite, or indeterminate sex/gender and we ask that you treat everyone with respect, politeness and warmth.
$12 admission includes your Dancecard-booklet!
Regretfully, The Wiggle Room is not wheelchair-accessible, as it is up a steep flight of stairs.
To get advance tickets you can click here!

SCREENING: Something Like a War & INDIA 67
Sunday, October 27, 1:00pm until 4:00pm
J.A. de Sève Cinema, 1400 de Maisonneuve Blvd. Ouest
SOMETHING LIKE A WAR
Deepa Dhanraj / UK - India / 1991 / 52 ' / English
Something like a War is a thought-provoking examination of India’s family planning program from the point of view of the women who are its primary targets. It traces the history of the family planning program and exposes the cynicism, corruption and brutality which characterizes its implementation. As the women themselves discuss their status, sexuality, fertility control and health, it is clear that their perceptions are in conflict with those of the program. The film is an excellent resource for the study of international development and aid, population control, reproductive rights, health and women.
INDIA 67
Singh Sandhu Sukhdev / India / 1968 / 57 ' / English
Produced and directed by S. Sukhdev, this film is a cinematic perusal of the contrasts, contradictions and diversity of India. The film has no commentary, but the shots speak for themselves. Just like Indian feature films, this film also has drama and songs, but these are ‘real-life’ rather than conceived specially for this film. The film produces the same effect on the viewers as a month-long visit to India, a sense of having seen everything and a sense of having seen nothing, both at the same time. Shot almost half a century ago, the film is still relevant to the present day 21st century India.

My Culture is Not a Costume: What’s the difference between appreciation, appropriation and just plain inappropriate?
Monday, October 28, 7 to 9 p.m.
Café du MAI - 3680 Jeanne Mance St.
In 2011, Students Teaching About Racism in Society (STARS) launched a poster campaign to raise awareness about the negative effects of racially simplistic Halloween costumes. Taking inspiration from this campaign and the controversy it caused, this public conversation will consider the unique reality of racism in Quebec. Why do pranks, comments and costumes that would seem outrageous in other parts of North America fly under the radar here? How do these repeated incidents of cultural insensitivity impact the experiences of people of colour? Is it possible to take a stand against cultural appropriation and racism without being labeled as hypersensitive, excessively politically correct, or worse, Anti-Quebec? Together, we will examine the limits of acceptability, the persistence of stereotypes and the costs of reducing a culture to a mere stereotype. What role do our media play in all of this? How can we move from pretending everything is okay to acknowledging and educating ourselves about the challenges we face and the steps required for them to be overcome?

EUFROSINA'S REVOLUTION - Quebec premiere with director
Monday, October 28, 7:00pm until 10:00pm
DB Clarke Theatre, 1455 de Maisonneuve West
Next Monday join us for the Quebec premiere of EUFROSINA'S REVOLUTION, an inspiring portrait of an indigenous woman who defies patriarchy and state power in Oaxaca, Mexico. Director Luciana Kaplan will be in attendance.
EUFROSINA'S REVOLUTION
Luciana Kaplan / Mexico / 2013 / 90 ' / Spanish / S.T. English
As a young woman, Eufrosina Cruz Mendoza decided to embark on a campaign to break the cycle of teenage pregnancy and domestic poverty that she saw growing up in Santa María Quiegolani, Oaxaca. To this end, in 2007, Eufrosina Mendoza was elected president of Oaxaca’s municipal council, but was denied the position because she was an indigenous woman. Instead of stopping her, this denial started her on an even bigger political career. Filmmaker Luciana Kaplan doggedly follows Eufrosina over the years as she attacks gender inequality and the lack of women’s voting rights in her community, while being harassed by local government every step of the way. Eufrosina is completely devoted to improving the lives of her people. But as she ascends the ranks of political power, can she still effectuate change from an ivory tower? Eufrosina’s Revolution is an eye-opening look at a new breed of politician, one who questions whether power is a problem or a privilege. One who gets things done. One who’s smart enough not to think anything will change, but who works in the hopes that it just might.

Solitary Confinement: Social Death and Its Afterlives - A Book Launch & Discussion
Friday, November 1, 6:00pm until 7:00pm
Concordia Community Solidarity Co-op Bookstore, 2150 Bishop Street
Join us as we host visiting scholar and author Lisa Guenther for the Montreal launch of her book 'Solitary Confinement: Social Death and Its Afterlives' (University of Minnesota Press, 2013).
This launch and book signing follows the 4pm - 6pm lecture by Prof. Guenther - "The California Prison Hunger Strikes and the Destruction of the World" (details here: https://www.facebook.com/events/474361756004939/)
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Lisa Guenther is associate professor of philosophy at Vanderbilt University and the author of The Gift of the Other: Levinas and the Politics of Reproduction. She facilitates a weekly discussion group at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville, Tennessee.
ABOUT THE BOOK
Prolonged solitary confinement has become a widespread and standard practice in U.S. prisons, and it is on the rise in Canada. In this book, Lisa Guenther examines the death-in-life experience of solitary confinement in America from the early nineteenth century to today’s supermax prisons. Drawing on phenomenological accounts of relational personhood, Guenther shows how extreme isolation structurally undermines prisoners’ sense of identity and their ability to understand the world. But the social history and first-person testimony of survivors also demonstrates the remarkable capacity of prisoners' living resistance to the structures of social death.
More information about the book can be found on the publishers site: http://www.upress.umn.edu/book-division/books/solitary-confinement

Les Pompes Funèbres
Saturday, November 2, 7:00pm

What the heck is Le Milieu?
Coop Le Milieu is a Community Art Studio in the Centre Sud neighbourhood of Montreal.

We opened in October 2012 because we felt a need in our community for a creative meeting place. A space where all people, from all walks of life, all ages, all origins could converge over art, coffee, conversation and their collective nature. It is also so much more than just a space as the creativity, connections and community built in the space radiate out in the streets through art interventions and creative community events.

The space is an open studio for creativity and also hosts a full schedule of events and workshops hosted by people from the community. These workshops cover everything from arts and crafts, popular education, citizen awareness, up-cycling, re-cycling materials, environmental issues, permaculture, and community talking circles.

Coop Le Milieu has had an incredible first year. We have felt the loving, receptive and engaging response from the community. We have expanded our support member base, we have kept the business afloat and we have created hundreds of opportunities for creative exchanges. It has been so inspiring!

Why are we asking for financial support?
We have had a great first year and we want to offer more! We are dreaming of a bigger space, better equipment to facilitate our participants creativity, more workshops, and more more more!

We have funded the space through generous donations from our participants, and largely from our own sweat. We love to cook and love to work, but it would be great to have some more money-love for the space so that we can give more back to our beloved and deserving community.

MAXIMUM TOLERATED DOSE - with director in attendance
Monday, November 4th, 7:00pm until 10:00pm
DB Clarke Theatre, Concordia University, 1455 de Maisonneuve Blvd. West
Monday, we invite you to join us for the Quebec premiere of this unique and poetic film that explores the psychic and ethical fallout from animal lab testing. Director Karol Orzechowski will be in attendance.
MAXIMUM TOLERATED DOSE
Karol Orzechowski / CA / 2012 / 90 ' / English
Maximum Tolerated Dose (MTD): An animal / human experiment to find the highest dose of a chemical that, when administered to a group of test subjects in a clinical trial, does not result in a fatality due to short-term toxicity. This dose is then used for longer-term safety studies of the same species, lasting anywhere from two years to a lifetime. The MTD test is controversial, however, in part because of difficulties in extrapolating findings to more realistic doses, and in extrapolating results from animals to humans.
Maximum Tolerated Dose is the first feature-length documentary by Decipher Films. Equal parts found-footage mash-up, verité investigation, and artful meditation, the film charts the lives of both humans and non-humans who have experienced animal testing first-hand, with hauntingly honest testimony of scientists and lab technicians whose ethics demanded they choose a different path, as well as the simultaneously heartwarming and heartbreaking stories of animals who have seen both sides of the cage. MTD aims to re-ignite the debate about animal testing by bringing these rarely-heard perspectives to the fore.

Safer Spaces in Slam
Tuesday, November 5th, 12:00pm until 2:00pm
Casa del Popolo, 4873 Boulevard Saint-Laurent
This workshop is about practicing what we preach. Our words have weighted meaning, our performances have the capacity to inspire and catalyze change. And our slam communities have the potential to both heal and harm us. This workshop is an honest examination of our responsibility to each other and our communities. Offering an open discussion on the dynamics of the slam scene, and providing some practical strategies on self care in the community. How can an organization as a whole encourage safer space? How do we critically reflect and remain accountable to our audiences and community? The facilitators welcome and urge you to critically engage with us in this essential discussion. You will leave with resources that can help you begin this work in your slam scene.
First come first served.

Listening Party + Panel
Tuesday, November 5th, 2:30pm until 5:00pm
Casa del Popolo, 4873 Boulevard Saint-Laurent
POETRY ON WHEELS with DJ Andy Williams
“Poetry on Wheels” pays homage to poets and storytellers of the "Civil Rights Movement", the "Beatniks", along with the "Generation-X Rappers" performing in acapella. Each story or poem shows years of societal inner growth and increased awareness of what it means to take a revolutionary stance on your own beliefs on democracy.
« La poésie prend la route » rend hommage aux poètes et conteurs de l’époque des grands combats pour les droits civils, les Beatniks, ainsi que les « Generation-X Rappers » qui rappent sans musique. Chaque histoire ou poème fait montre de plusieurs années de croissance intérieure sociale et de sensibilisation sur le sens d’être révolutionnaire et de suivre ses convictions sur la démocratie.

VIABILITY OF THE SPOKEN WORD ALBUM
Spoken word is alive and thriving in Canada. But where do poets go when they want to find other venues and methods of presenting their work? Are their horizons limited, or are CDs, film, solo shows and multimedia viable options in 2013. If not, what are the options? Today's panelists are all experts at placing poetry in multiple venues, often in places where it has never been before. What do they think about the future of poetry in performance? Where are we going and how do we get there?

Meditation in the Quaker Tradition - November 7th!
Thursday, November 7, 5:00pm
McGill Student Services, Brown Building, 3600 McTavish Street
On Thursday, November 7th at 5:00 PM, McGill Chaplaincy will be hosting another meditation in the Quaker tradition. Since Quakers aren't very well known, a few words about how it works:
The essence of the Quaker tradition, expressed in different ways by different people, is that there is something divine in every person. Thus, no need for priests, hierarchy, or dogma; there are atheist Quakers, Buddhist Quakers, and Christian Quakers, and anything in between. The goal of this practice is to get in touch with the highest part of ourselves so we can speak and act from it. Sometimes (not always), it feels right to share something from that encounter with the group. If so, we speak it aloud.
"Quakers gather in the silence and wait expectantly to come into the presence of the divine. During the silence anyone may feel moved to offer a simple spoken message (vocal ministry) that is inspired by this holy encounter. Following the message, the silence resumes. A period of worship may include several messages or none at all. Quaker meetings are not a debate so it is inappropriate to respond directly to another person although it is not unusual for people to build on what has been said before.
We'll meet in the Meditation Room at McGill Chaplaincy, Brown Building, 3600 McTavish Street, Suite 2100 at 5 pm on Thursday, November 7th.

You will be equipped with the knowledge to complete anything you don’t finish at the workshop on your own. (Includes handout of instructions)

For this workshop you will need to come with enough fabric to start at least one of the projects indicated. Feel free to mix and match fabrics and create a more patchwork feel if you want. Woven fabrics only, no knits, no stretch. Great way to upcycle bed sheets, pillowcases, fabric scraps, etc.

* Heavy decorating fabrics preferred.

Pot Holders: 4 pieces of fabric measuring at least 8”x 8” for the outside and 6 pieces of batting for the insides also measuring 8”x 8”.

* Optional: approx. 2m of 1″ wide bias binding or other trim (lace, etc)

This is a perfect workshop to mix with the Silk Screening workshop on Thurs Nov 14th at 5pm. Anti-Colonial Thanksgiving and Supporting First Nations Communities

Last night I attended the Anti-Colonial Thanksgiving Dinner at the Native Friendship Centre of Montreal. This annual community event is hosted in part by Frigo Vert, with food provided by volunteers of the People`s Potato and the Midnight Kitchen.

The night began with a drumming performance with singing, and was followed by a free meal, open to anyone. During the meal, the speaker Irkar Beljaars, from the radio show Native Solidarity News on CKUT, introduced some of the struggles faced by first nations culture in the past as well as the present, highlighting residential schools, the Harper government and their negative effect on modern intiatives, as well as importance of learning from and supporting our elders and educating our children to avoid past mistakes.

Dinner was followed by a screening of the documentary We Were Children which critically discusses the realities behind the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

The genocide of the first nations people of Canada is our country`s biggest shame. The UN has been urging the Canadian government to acknowledge it`s crimes, but the Harper government continues to deny this history. It`s heartbreaking to learn about what the people in power of this country have done in the past, as much as it is to witness communities struggling in and out of reserves. Moreover, dealing with insulting cultural stereotypes in our modern culture and lack of government response for basic services is unconscionable. Knowing the suffering, many non-native people are left wondering how they can engage and help out.

What you can do
  • Educate yourself. Not sure why people are offended? Find out why. Discuss, read articles online, listen to radio interviews, check out books, and most impacting - check out some of the many documentaries that has been created to show what has happened and is happening to the first nations cultures of Canada.
  • Change your mentality from go-to cultural stereotypes and jokes from one of compassion and understanding for the struggles of the people you see.
  • Spread the word. Speak up about the injustices of the past and present. Discuss with friends and family. Clarify misconceptions and offer insight and perspective.

Discussion/Zine launch: Capitalism on the edge: The crisis that came the crisis yet to come
Wednesday, November 13th, 7:00pm
La Belle Époque, 1984 rue Wellington
A discussion examining the changing nature of Canadian capitalism in the midst of the current global economic crisis. This text/discussion focuses on challenging the ongoing claim by the Canadian political and economic elite that Canada has fared well during the financial crisis.
Instead, there are constant signs that the Canadian economy is teetering on
the edge of its own ruinous financial crisis: the country is facing unprecedented concentrations of extreme wealth alongside growing poverty
rates, while Canadian capitalism is increasingly dependent on resource-driven capitalism, ongoing colonialism, precarious low-wage work, and increasing gentrification in rurban centres through housing speculation
bubbles. That these are the measures that has driven capitalism to stave off this current crisis, yet are the fundamentals that will drive them into
crisis, because they are part of a longer-term shift in the nature of Canadian Capitalism.

Bareoke (Strip Karaoke)
Thursday, November 14th, 10:00pm until 3:00am
Cabaret Playhouse, 5656 Du Parc Ave
PROMO VIDEO
The lovechild of our 2 favourite pastimes, singing and getting naked in public, Bareoke is the ultimate activity for exhibitionists, voyeurs and karaoke aficionados alike.
Following the success of Lipster, the Sunday night weekly karaoke that got everyone and their grandmas shaking their bums, we decided it would be fun to shake our bare bums… and perhaps more!
Unfortunately, nudity permits are not something one can carry around in their wallet like a driver’s license and baring it all in a public space can leave you and the establishment with a hefty fine. This meant we had to find a location that was already flagged as a nudist friendly space.
No stranger to performing in local strip clubs with our burlesque troupe Glam Gam, we realized this type of venue would surely allow us to transform Lipster into Stripster!
In the early days, we hosted this event as a once and a while type of thing at Café Cléopâtre and Second Floor but people wanted more….so we gave it to them. Now you can find us the second Thursday of every month at Cabaret Playhouse, which comes equipped with a large stage, a smoke machine and crazy lighting which allows people to take their performances to the next level.
In order to make this event as much fun as possible it is important for us to maintain a comfortable and safe space where consent is always sexy! We are thrilled to have performers of all different backgrounds, ages, body types, gender identities and sexualities. Some people will take off just a sock, others will get down to their skivvies and a lot of brave souls prance around in their birthday suits! The best part is that everyone respects and encourages each other’s boundaries with little to no policing on our part.

LET THE FIRE BURN - Quebec premiere with director Q&A
Friday, November 15, 7:00pm - 10:00pm
J.A. de Sève Cinema, 1400 de Maisonneuve Blvd
Join us for the Quebec premiere of one of the best political docs of the year. Director Jason Osder will be in attendance. This screening is co-presented with RIDM.
In the astonishingly gripping Let the Fire Burn, director Jason Osder has crafted that rarest of cinematic objects: a found-footage film that unfurls with the tension of a great thriller. On May 13, 1985, a longtime feud between the city of Philadelphia and controversial radical urban group MOVE came to a deadly climax. By order of local authorities, police dropped military-grade explosives onto a MOVE-occupied row house. TV cameras captured the conflagration that quickly escalated—and resulted in the tragic deaths of eleven people (including five children) and the destruction of 61 homes. It was only later discovered that authorities decided to “...let the fire burn.” Using only archival news coverage and interviews, first-time filmmaker Osder has brought to life one of the most tumultuous and largely forgotten clashes between government and citizens in modern American history.

The film takes us on a journey to investigate the contemporary history of misguided attempts by the Canadian government to assert it's sovereignty in the High Arctic and how a generation of radical Inuit changed the political landscape of Canada's North. Hiding my Convictions
Monday, November 18th, 7:00pm until 9:00pm
La Ruche d'Art, 4525 Saint-Jacques St.
What makes talking about spirituality so uncomfortable?
Few things can make a social situation more awkward than someone casually mentioning a religious affiliation or mystical ritual. In our secularized society, we are free to hold spiritual beliefs, engage in spiritual practices, or reject them altogether, but we struggle to talk openly about these choices. Rather, they are to be expressed in the privacy of one’s own home or shared within the confines of a like-minded community, not put on display for others to see or hear. What are the implications of hiding this significant piece of our identities? Is our fear of making others uneasy, of being judged or evangelized, stopping us from engaging in meaningful dialogue about our most life-motivating convictions? This public conversation invites all participants, religious, atheist, agnostic or none of the above, to share their stories - stories of rich exchange across spiritual divides and stories of badly strained relationships. Together, we seek to uncover what makes the topic of spirituality so uncomfortable, whether this is something worth changing and, if so, how we might begin to heal the centuries of wounds that underlie this sensitive subject.

Lessons in Non Monogamy: What Have we Learned So Far?
Tuesday, November 19th, 7:00pm until 9:00pm
Atelier CMD, 4000 Avenue de Chateaubriand
These days, there’s a ton of non-monogamy 101 information out in the world—you can read up in lots of places about the basics of opening up an existing relationship, navigating the first pangs of jealousy, and figuring out how to colour-code your calendar. But when you’ve been doing non-monogamy for a while, you may have hit upon some challenges they don’t cover in the intro manuals. Relationships shift and end, configurations take on new shapes and sizes, living situations evolve, sexual desire waxes and wanes, new people show up in the mix. In navigating your own poly waters, what mistakes have you made along the way? What would you do differently if you could start over? What lessons have you learned? What wisdom can you share? Where do you need to challenge yourself to grow some more? What support do you need going forward? Come enjoy some thought-provoking exercises and facilitated discussion to assess where you’re at and get some ideas of where to go next. Newbies are welcome, but the discussion will be geared to those who have a couple years’ experience under their belts.

“Ron Mann investigates the miraculous, near-secret world of fungi. Visionaries Gary Lincoff and Larry Evans lead us on a hunt for the wild mushroom and the deeper cultural experiences attached to the mysterious fungi. The oldest and largest living organisms recorded on Earth are both fungi. And their use by a new, maverick breed of scientists and thinkers has proven vital in the cleansing of sites despoiled by toxins and as a "clean" pesticide, among many other environmentally friendly applications. Combining material filmed at the Telluride Mushroom Fest with animation and archival footage, along with a neo-psychedelic soundtrack by The Flaming Lips, this film opens the doors to perception, taking the audience on an extraordinary trip.”

UNDOING BORDER IMPERIALISM: Book Launch & Panel Discussion
featuring Adil Charkaoui, Robyn Maynard, Mostafa Henaway, & Harsha Walia
Join us for a panel discussion on Undoing Border Imperialism with social justice activists and authors Harsha Walia, Robyn Maynard, Mostafa Henaway and Adil Charkaoui.
Undoing Border Imperialism is an exciting new book that situates immigrant rights movements within a transnational analysis of capitalism, labor exploitation, settler colonialism, state building, and racialized empire. By providing the alternative conceptual frameworks of border imperialism and decolonization, this work offers relevant insights for all grassroots and social movement organizers on effective strategies to overcome the barriers and borders within our movements in order to cultivate fierce, loving, and sustainable communities of resistance striving toward liberation (AK Press/IAS 2013).

Philosophy at Coop Le Milieu
Tuesday, November 26th, 6:00pm until 8:00pm
Le Milieu, 1251 rue Robin
Philosophers and psychotherapists are calling on people to live like a Stoic for a week (from November 25 to December 1, 2013). The ancient Stoic writers Seneca, Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius etc. offered a wide range of practical advice and guidance on how to live well. But who were they and why should we care about them? Can Stoic philosophy really help people to lead better and happier lives? This bilingual workshop, being held in the framework of “Live Like a Stoic Week 2013”, will consist of a brief introduction to and discussion of Stoic philosophy, followed by a presentation of the Stoic Week handbook, containing a series of exercises, reflections and meditations prepared by academics and psychotherapists, based on ancient Stoicism.

Cabaret Playhouse, 5656 Du Parc Ave
DANCE PARTY fundraiser for Gran Lakou, an LGBTIQ dance troupe based in Jacmel, Haiti.
About Gran Lakou :
Gran Lakou is an LGBTIQ dance troupe in Jacmel, Haiti. In performance, Gran Lakou mixes folklore and contemporary forms of dance to create a unique style that embraces both the traditional and the avant-garde. Having recently lost their practice space to homophobic roommates, Gran Lakou is currently looking for a safe and permanent practice space. Some of the dancers are regularly targeted, intimidated, and attacked because of their sexuality-- for many, Gran Lakou is a refuge, an oasis of acceptance. Sadly, their current situation is anything but safe. Only a few weeks ago, some jerk snuck into their practice space and slashed their drumskins.

Expozine 2013 REVIEW

$
0
0

Another awesome Expozine. Two weeks later I have finally read my new zines and processed the at-times overwhelming and incredibly exciting event.

I often joke that I like Expozine better than Christmas.
It should be known that I detest Christmas however.

But Expozine is such an inspiring exhbition of independent talent from all over North America. Every year there are new exhibitors and a larger crowd of folks who want to see this display of accessible indie art.

The music this year, a live DJ, was really awesome, and got many people, especially kids, dancing in the cafe area. As always, delicious cheap beer and samosas kept us going through the day, especially during the long rainstorm where we dared not venture out.

Expozine is the most amount of introverts you`ll ever see in one room, and it`s really cool to see all the artists and writers of Montreal (and beyond) coming out of the woodwork. I think an ideal expozine would have more space between the tables, and little personal reading pods set up everywhere for quick escapes from the intensity of the fair.

Thanks to Louis Rastelli and the Expozine Team for hosting such an amazing event in our community.

If you want to stay in touch about Zine events such as Zine launches, Call for submissions, Workshops and more, stay tuned to the Monday events listing, or join my club Montreal Zinesters here!

BEST ZINES FROM 2013 (in my humble opinion)

Vegan Adventure Guide: The World is your Toilet
By Moose Lane
This hilarious zine details how to both shit and piss with comfort and respect in various places under various circumstances. If you want to know how to work the world like the animal you are, check this zine out!

Squid-gee 4
By Keenan
The latest in the Squid-gee series by the talented Keenan, Squid-gee four does not fail to delight with it`s amazing attention to detail in this creative comic, coupled with amusing dialogue rife with puns. Looking forward to the upcoming film Pro-Can!

Chico 3
By Kate Lavut
The latest in Lavut`s Chico series which chronicles a true tale of a trip to Mexico when she dressed as a boy. This edition is made on a high quality paper in wide format size, which is a new style for this zinester. Chico`s tales are cute, funny and endearing. I recommend for everyone to check it at at the upcoming zine launch party : Facebook Event

Naughty Lady Sansa
By Sara H.
I think it`s incredibly hilarious that someone made an erotic short story about the character Sansa from Game of Thrones. Short and amusing, this mini-erotic is well written with many clever references to the series that kept me chuckling throughout.

Hipster Pear
by Drew McKevitt
This comic by artist McKevitt is part of a series of pear comics which has been growing over the past few years. Endearing little stereotypes of hipsters including bike enthusiasm, excessive scarf use and the classic love of unknown indie music.

How To Keep Your Cat Happy
by Kate Rotondo
This mega-cute minizine created by a new zinester in the Montreal, offers various blurbs on how to make sure your feline friends are content which are coupled with psychedelic cat cartoons. I bought a few to give to all my cat co-habituating friends.

Clean and Green: A Comic for children about environmental revolution
by Kaleb Philps
This zine caught my eye as a great zine for kids of various ages. Made by a dad with the help of his kids, this zine covers the importance of composting and recycling through colourful cartoons. A second zine sequel covers the problems of plastic. Now this guy is a rad dad.

"It`s So Hard To Find Good Help These Days"
Representations of Social Class in Fairy Tales
by Claire Nicolson-Hurtig
This small zine was one of my favourite this year. Addressing social class corruption, with specific examples shown through quotes found in the original popular fairy tales. These examples show how those in positions of "service" have been given value from loyalty and hard work, beyond their personal human value. Interesting read!

Zine in A Bottle
By Lark
This highly creative zine concept by Lark combines the concepts of "Message-in-a-bottle" with "A-choose-you-own-adventure" and a scavenger hunt. Starting January 1st recipients of the home-brew beer bottle will choose which location to go to and discover a new series of adventure options. Such an amazing outside-the-box format, which will get people not only reading, but adventuring around the city of Montreal.

EDUCATION FOR ALL! Public Gathering at Education Minister Marie Malavoy’s “Rencontre Citoyenne”
MONDAY, DECEMBER 2, 6pm (sharp!)
1000 boulevard Rolland-Therrien (Longueuil
The Collectif education sans frontières (CESF) is calling for a public gathering at the upcoming “Rencontre Citoyenne” by Education Minister Marie Malavoy in Longueuil. The public event (“an activity open to all”) will also include Bernard Drainville, the Minister responsible for the proposed Charter of Values (Bill 60). The invitation for Minister Malavoy’s event is linked here: http://mariemalavoy.com/sites/mariemalavoy.com/files/image/affiche_pour_internet_activite_charte_02-12-13.png
Marie Malavoy still refuses to issue clear Ministry of Education directives to allow non-status children to attend primary and secondary school for free. Instead, there remains confusion and ambiguity about whether non-status children can register (with differences between school boards) and Minister Malavoy still insists on charging $5000-$6000 per child, an exorbitant fee for non-status families who are already precarious economically.
The Collectif education sans frontières’ objections with current Ministry of Education directives are summarized here: www.solidarityacrossborders.org/en/enfants-sans-papiers-declaration-du-collectif-education-sans-frontieres-au-sujet-des-directives-du-ministere-de-leducation
Quebec remains the only jurisdiction in North America that systematically excludes non-status children from free access to primary and secondary schools. For example, children in the same situation all over the United States are able to attend primary and secondary schools for free.
Marie Malavoy has also refused to discuss this issue publicly. Both Radio-Canada and the Montreal Gazette, as well as other media, have done detailed reports about the injustice facing non-status children in Quebec, but Malavoy has refused to speak to the media about this issue.

FREE PUSSY RIOT: THE MOVIE - Quebec premiere screening
Monday, December 2nd, 7:00pm until 10:00pm
DB Clarke Theatre, Concordia University, 1455 de Maisonneuve West
Feminist punk rock activists stand up to President Vladimir Putin and pay the price for showing the world Russia's slide into a totalitarian system.
This doc goes beyond the trial and imprisonment of the women who sang a punk prayer in Moscow’s main cathedral calling for the removal of President Vladimir Putin from power.
Current through July 2013, the film explains why a female rock band asked 'Mary, Mother of God' to rid Russia of President Vladimir Putin's increasingly harsh and repressive regime. It details the lawlessness of the court system, the perversion of the Constitution and the backward slide into a totalitarian system supported by the Russian Orthodox Church.
The film documents the growing repression by the Putin regime and includes extensive interviews with members of Pussy Riot, their families, numerous dissidents and coverage of the huge anti-government protests that took place this past year. Footage also includes a trip to the labor camp where one of the women is being held. A portion of the proceeds will support the legal fund for the imprisoned young women.

The Shadow Effect: a screening
Monday, December 2nd, 7:00pm
MDTC, 3475 University
"The Shadow Effect is an emotionally-gripping, visually-compelling docudrama that reveals the hidden forces that continually unseat politicians, destroy celebrity careers, destabilize the economy and affect the lives of millions each year.
"Exposing the opposing forces of both light and dark that compete for attention within every human being, Debbie Ford presents in this film the hidden power of “the Shadow” alongside Deepak Chopra, Marianne Williamson, Mark Victor Hansen, James Van Praagh and others.
"In this life-altering journey, individuals who have transcended child abuse, racism, the Holocaust, war, and wounded upbringings, share their remarkable stories. Meet those who have learned to face their terror, heal their wounds, and embrace their higher, heroic selves to overcome the shadow effect."

Urgent Situation in Barriere Lake : presentation by Michel Thusky
Tuesday, December 3rd, 6:00pm
1500 de Maisonneuve West, Suite 404
Once again, the Quebec government is allowing large logging companies to clear-cut sensitive sites on the territory of the Algonquins of Barriere Lake, including sites which they know to be of particular cultural and ecological importance. They are also trying to enable a mining company to open a copper-nickel mine.
In a november 24th letter to the Quebec government, Barriere Lake's leadership writes: "We will use all our means, limited as they are, to protect our territory and our cultural sites. If it again means the [Quebec police's] strong arm tactics, so be it, and we are ready to once again face the consequences."
Michel Thusky, a respected elder of the community, will be here to speak about the community's struggle and the current sitaution. Very short videos will also be shown. Please come and find out how you can support the community in their struggle.
For more background about the struggle of Barriere Lake: http://www.barrierelakesolidarity.org/2013/11/situation-becoming-more-urgent-event.html
--The presentation will be in French, the videos in English. Whisper translation will be available. Childcare can be made available. Please let us know 24h in advance, at barrierelakesolidarity@gmail.com.

- ARTIST STATEMENT -
I’ve lived in Montreal for my entire life. Although I have travelled to other countries and states and provinces, Montreal is where I've spent an overwhelming amount of my existence. Being fixed in one geographic location for an extended period of time can impose a designated way of viewing situations and surroundings. The every-day becomes the every-month and then the every-year; always seeing the same scenarios until you look at them differently.
To confront this notion, I have isolated individual segments of time in order to emphasize the peculiarities of mankind. By forcing moments into the static state of a photograph, superficial and supposedly normal facets of our society become unsettling and bizarre. When seemingly ordinary circumstances are enisled without context, they become surreal.
MONTREALWAYS is a commentary on how human-beings interact with their environment, and the way that their environment responds.

PARIS IS BURNING - film & booklaunch with live performance
Monday, December 9th, 7:00pm until 10:00pm
J.A. de Sève Cinema, 1400 de Maisonneuve Blvd. Ouest
Join us for our last event for 2013! This film screening will be preceded by a live performance by Kama La Mackerel and will be followed by a world premiere book launch of new Queer Film Classic PARIS IS BURNING with author Lucas Hilderbrand in attendance.
Paris Is Burning documents the culture of drag balls in New York City, circa the mid-to-late 1980s. Gay and trans ball “children” (young participants) compete in categories ranging from High Fashion to Military Realness to Luscious Body, living a fantasy or sometimes simply displaying their beauty. A predominantly African-American and Latino scene, the balls began to attract the spotlight with the mainstreaming of the dance form voguing. The film itself would become one of the most popular queer films and most commercially successful documentaries of the 1990s….

Bareoke (Strip Karaoke)
Thursday, December 12th, 10:00pm until 3:00am
Cabaret Playhouse, 5656 Du Parc Av
*Now happening THE SECOND Thursday of every month at Cabaret Playhouse where draft beer is 2 for $5 all night! PROMO VIDEO
The lovechild of our 2 favourite pastimes, singing and getting naked in public, Bareoke is the ultimate activity for exhibitionists, voyeurs and karaoke aficionados alike.

The Future of Urban Cycling in Montreal and Beyond
Saturday, December 14th, 10:30am
McGill University SCS Personal and Cultural Enrichment (PACE), 688 Sherbrooke Street West
We are offering a full-day workshop as a part of PACE's One Day @ McGill initiative.
This workshop could be of special interest to your readership. Would it be possible to include this information on your blog? I have attached a pdf poster for this event which you are welcome to post and circulate.
Cycling in cities is becoming a major mode of transport deserving attention from the public as well as policy makers. Nevertheless, given the contested nature of city streets, urban cycling comes with a significant share of sometimes life-threatening challenges. During this one-day workshop let by Professor Ahmed El-Geneidy (McGill School of Urban Planning) we will present research undertaken by Transportation Research at McGill (TRAM) into the types of cyclists in Montreal and their needs, safety issues related to bicycle parking in Montreal, and Bixi usage and bicycle-transit integration opportunities. We will also look at international solutions to addressing challenges to urban cycling and will consider how Montreal could learn from these examples.

We feel that the space is under-used, and would like to know how we can facilitate more people using the space, and make more people feel welcome in the space.
We don't really want this discussion to be too focused on pitching ideas for the collective to carry out, because we are pretty tapped out. We do, however, want to talk about your ideas for the space and how we can help you see them through.
So come armed with insights, ideas and suggestions! There will be delicious snacks provided.

11th Edition of The International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers
Place des Arts, 175, rue Sainte-Catherine Ouest
December 17th, 1 p.m
Dear Partners and Allies,
On December 17th of each year, sex workers (SWs) around the world mobilize against the violence that we face everyday. This year, the Stella team along with outreach workers from the REZO sex workers program invite you to show your solidarity by walking with us during the Red Umbrella March. We will be walking in solidarity with sex worker groups and organizations from around the world to take a stand against the violence that is committed against us, as well as the climate of impunity and the trivialization of violence against SWs. The red umbrella is a symbol of this international movement to recognize our rights. It signifies our beauty, and our capacity to combat attacks committed against us, be they from humans or raining down from above.
Every day, many sex workers are subject to violence, prejudice and social stigma, all in addition to police repression. The criminalization of security measures surrounding sex work creates a context that enables the acts of physical and sexual violence that we so often encounter. Moreover, by having to hide from police we are forced into isolated and unsafe work environments. While the Canadian government spends a fortune fighting prostitution, sex workers are criminalized, deprived of the right to police protection, and incarcerated.
In 2014, the Supreme Court of Canada must render their judgement on the prostitution laws. The following months will be crucial for the recognition of our rights. It is of the utmost importance and necessity that you lend your support to speak out against the violence that we face. Today, many of us are stigmatized, beaten, raped, kidnapped, and murdered. Often, this is treated with indifference or even contempt. Together, let us remember our brothers and sisters who have been subjected to this violence, as well as those who are no longer with us as a result of it.
This awareness raising event will take place this upcoming December 17. You are all invited to join us.
— 1 p.m.: Meet-up in front of the Montreal Museum of Modern Art (185, St. Catherine West, corner Jeanne-Mance), metro Place des arts.
— 1:15 p.m.: Speeches from various spokespeople and allies.
— 1:45 p.m.: The festive march begins on St. Catherine street going East until Champlain, then North to Ontario street, to end at City Bar.

Lancement du queerzine THE HOLY MALE VOL. 2 queerzine launch
Wednesday, 5:30pm until 8:00pm
Formats, 2, rue Sainte-Catherine Est, espace 302
The Holy Male Queerzine was a happy accident. It was born out of necessity and self-fertilization. It knew it had a place in the world and willed itself into existence though the delightful hands and hearts of queer men from around the world.

The Holy Male seeks to give voice to the spiritual lives of queer men and while doing so allowing them to express the breadth of their experience in it’s totality including the crude and sexy bits. We aim to use mind body and spirit to create art, words and ritual, we share this experience through print, and various artistic modalities, but always with the intention of healing and mending the hearts and souls of boys.

We wish to make visible the nudging of our hearts to praise the vulnerable and the ugly and to live lives of honesty. We wish to be an antidote to the mass of garbage that has piled high on the male psyche, shrouding it’s mysteries and potential for good with guilt, shame and confusion.

We wish to unveil the often-overlooked circumcision of the heart from the head of the boy-child in our society and dare to seek remedies for its quick rejuvenation.

We embrace the contradictions of the universe and the sweet perfection that rests behind it. The Holy Male does not ask for approval nor respect, it does not seek acceptance or understanding or adoration or praise, it aims to exist as silence does, unwavering, and exquisite. Existing as the rocks, animals and trees do, brutal and cleansing as the wind and as the earthquakes, forest fires and floods.

We aim to show that we are not flat, we are not normal, we are not unique and we are neither simple nor complicated. We are everything and nothing and we are able to be beautiful and frightening all at once.

The Holy Man is a thread that grounds centuries of queer spirits together here and now, it is a receptacle of all things precious and sacred to the physical form of the male in this reality, while it acknowledges the impermanence of the body and the mind in the reality; it seeks to use it’s being to it’s best advantage by being a bringer of light, love, compassion and understanding.

The Holy Male is an aspiring magical tome. It is the book of shadows of a queer coven of men dedicated to the lightening of hearts and healing of wounds. It is a seedling with the promise of adulthood and inevitable wisdom. It longs to grow strong and sensible.

The Holy Male requires your voice, and invites you to be a part of a moving inward, a new reality. We welcome you to join us in the adventure of casting the energies of excitement and unity, we wish to be inclusive and ever expanding, please help us bring more light to the spiritual lives of men everywhere and create a tangible object in this dimension that reflects the multi faceted diamond that is our experience.

Thursday, January 9th, 10:00pm until 3:00am
Cabaret Playhouse, 5656 Du Parc Av
PROMO VIDEO: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKQn0CPBi64
The lovechild of our 2 favourite pastimes, singing and getting naked in public, Bareoke is the ultimate activity for exhibitionists, voyeurs and karaoke aficionados alike.
Following the success of Lipster, the Sunday night weekly karaoke that got everyone and their grandmas shaking their bums, we decided it would be fun to shake our bare bums… and perhaps more
In the early days, we hosted this event as a once and a while type of thing at Café Cléopâtre and Second Floor but people wanted more….so we gave it to them.

A message from the Rebelles

This hard-hitting film is unique both in its scope and the journey that produced it.
The documentary takes the viewer through a journey that begins in Tottenham and spirals out to a detailed look at the role of police, power, racism, government, prison, war, resistance and more.

Hello feminists !
This coming march, Rebelles Montréal Collectif would like to organize a pro-choice action. As there is strength in unity and diversity, we would like to invite absolutely everyone who reads this call out to come organize and rebELLE with us. If you are interested please send us an email to rebellesmontreal@gmail.com or facebook us ! Preferably before January 15th so we can start to get things organized. If you can't participate, please share !
Why do we want to co-organize with individuals, collectives and groups a clearly feminist thus pro-choice action ?
-Recently Mr Stephen Woodsworth has said that he is AGAIN thinking, in a sneaky manner, of proposing an anti-choice motion into parliament.
-The fact that, while we must protect what we have already gained against the rise of the right, there are many women in Canada who do not have easy access- such as rural women, all women in PEI as well as migrant women. There is still work to do.
-The insistence of groups like Quebec Vie have on planting themselves in front of the Morgentaler Clinic with the messages that they believe to be “pro-life” but are actually just misogynist.
-The REFUSAL of the Harper conservatives to support the right to choose outside of Canada, even for victims of violence.
-International solidarity- the volition of the right to control women is international , of which we are reminded by with the proposed anti-choice law in Spain, the case of Beatrice in Salvador and the death of Savita in Ireland.

Bien-être collectif en milieu militant : une introduction
Wednesday, January 15th, 5:30pm

Event series: A Critical History of the Police
Monday, January 20th, 7:00pm
La Belle Époque, 1984 rue Wellington
In this event series, we will explore the notion of 'policing', and we will attempt to chart the history, development, and current manifestations of the police. Focusing on North America, but keeping in mind other contexts, some points of inquiry will be:
- To where can we trace the origins of the police?
- What functions do the police carry out? In what way, and under what conditions, have these evolved?
- How have developments in surveillance technologies affected police strategies for order, control, and crime prevention?
- The role of police in the suppression of social movements
- The police as an autonomous political entity
This group will meet every three weeks. The first meetup will be Monday, January 20, at 7 pm. Suggested reading: Our Enemies in Blue (Chapters 1 and 2). Copies of the readings will be available at La Belle Époque two weeks prior.

Consider it a group discussion on how to create, communicate, and make people connect over ideas, and concepts.
The panel members will also interact with the crowd in a novel way, by brainstorming with them at the end of the event to come up with great ideas on how to communicate new concepts! Think of it like a living workshop on how to constantly create and communicate new ideas, and retain the interest and engagement of a multitude of people.

Crystal Lameman & Garth Lenz: Tar Sands Exposed - A Speakers Tour in Montreal
Sunday, January 26, 2:00pm
Maison du développement durable, 50, rue Sainte-Catherine Ouest
The Tar Sands of Alberta are one of the most environmentally damaging projects ever undertaken. Production, transportation and use of oil sands are unacceptable due to their direct impact on air, land, water and public health. The risk is even greater due to the acceleration of climate change associated with this extreme form of energy. This industrial project is also harming Indigenous communities: the Mikisew Cree First Nation, the Beaver Lake Cree Nation and the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation are faced with an increasing rate of cancer due to the contamination of their water and territories by toxins, and are seeing their ancestral lands destroyed by the operations and spills from the Tar Sands.
The Tar Sands Speakers Tour offers a way to further educate and mobilize the general public around this significant threat to Canada and Quebec. Fossil fuel extraction threatens front-line communities, and our health and land are jeopardized by pipelines, refineries, and climate change. This event aims to create an intimate conversation with individuals directly affected by tar sands development, and those working to stop it. The power of these first hand storytellers moves the issue from the abstract to the concrete, and compels the audience to take action.
Three speakers, with different perspectives, will share their stories.
See http://www.thetarsandstrial.ca/ for more information about this unprecedented constitutional challenge against the Albertan and Canadian government.
