VIGIL: Justice for Victims of Police Killings: Vigil and March
Tuesday, October 22nd:30pm until 8:30pm
480 rue Gilford, métro Laurier (sortie St-Joseph)
Family-friendly; welcome to all! Rain or shine.
Please get in touch about any accessibility needs
The families of people killed by the police, along with their friends and their allies, are organizing the fourth annual commemorative vigil to remember those who have lost their lives at the hands of the police. These families, who face an uphill battle in uncovering the truth and obtaining justice for their loved ones, need our support.
The purpose of the march is to:REMEMBER the victims who lost their lives to police violence and abuse; and SUPPORT their families in any way we can.
In Montreal, there have been more than 60 people killed by the police since 1987. This includes the killings of Mario Hamel and Patrick Limoges (June 7, 2011) and Farshad Mohammadi (January 6, 2012). This past summer Robert Hénault, 70, was shot inside his small Plateau apartment and died of his injuries on August 8.
This year, we also support all those who have survived police beatings. This includes Didier Berry who was beaten and hospitalized by Montreal police on October 24, 2012, as well as Norbert Mestenapeo, a young Innu father who was brutally beaten by Sûreté du Québec police on July 16, 2013 in the community of Unamen Shipu on the North Shore.

CONVERSATION: Older, Aggressive and On the Prowl
Wednesday, October 23rd, 7:00pm until 9:00pm
LA CENTRALE galerie Powerhouse, 4296 boulevard Saint-Laurent
Considering the term was invented less than twenty years ago, the Cougar has entered our cultural imagination in a big way. From renowned celebrity cougars like Demi Moore and Kim Cattrell, to reality shows like Extreme Cougars, to countless references in music, movies and TV, it’s clear that, as a society, we are fascinated by these sexually-charged older women. Who is the real person behind this stereotype and why does she fascinate us so? Where do our judgments about her, be they positive or negative, come from? Why do we point, stare, applaud or laugh? What makes us feel entitled to make comments and pass judgment? Is she just asking for it? This public conversation considers our long-standing practice of categorizing and dismissing older women and seeks to better understand our current obsession with the cougar. Why does her choice of clothing matter to us? Why do we care who she sleeps with? More significantly, beyond extreme visibility or invisibility, can we make a space for older female sexuality in our society?

PARTY: MONTREAL QUEER SLOWDANCE!
Friday, October 25, 9:30pm until 3:00am
The Wiggle Room, 3874 St. Laurent
You are cordially invited to ♥ MONTREAL QUEER SLOWDANCE! ♥
With a lending library of designated dancers for all you wallflowers, and a dancecard-booklet to set up dances in advance (should you choose to), Montreal Slowdance Night has all slow songs, all night long! (Except for the occasional intermission when we play the fastest songs we can find!)
It's high school with a happy ending. Come and experience why slow is beautiful, and why love is not ironic. Fabulous and inspired attire, while desired, is not required. But would be AWESOME & HAWT.
Straights are totally welcome at this event. This event is open to everyone. We are trying to alternate monthly between queer and straight. I know that sounds weird. Segregationist. But it's been our experience that queers and straights prefer having separate slowdances, and we are just trying to accomodate that. Everyone is, however, welcome at either.
We are always looking for designated dancers for our evenings. If you are outgoing, warm, and willing to undertake the very serious duty and responsibility of inviting wallflowers out onto the dancefloor - if in fact, such a prospect gives you great joy - then please contact the organizers at inconsolablecat@hotmail.com.
PLEASE NOTE that this event is friendly to everyone. What this means is that you may be asked to dance by someone of the same, opposite, or indeterminate sex/gender and we ask that you treat everyone with respect, politeness and warmth.
$12 admission includes your Dancecard-booklet!
Regretfully, The Wiggle Room is not wheelchair-accessible, as it is up a steep flight of stairs.

SCREENING: Something Like a War & INDIA 67

J.A. de Sève Cinema, 1400 de Maisonneuve Blvd. Ouest
SOMETHING LIKE A WAR
Deepa Dhanraj / UK - India / 1991 / 52 ' / English
Something like a War is a thought-provoking examination of India’s family planning program from the point of view of the women who are its primary targets. It traces the history of the family planning program and exposes the cynicism, corruption and brutality which characterizes its implementation. As the women themselves discuss their status, sexuality, fertility control and health, it is clear that their perceptions are in conflict with those of the program. The film is an excellent resource for the study of international development and aid, population control, reproductive rights, health and women.
INDIA 67
Singh Sandhu Sukhdev / India / 1968 / 57 ' / English
Produced and directed by S. Sukhdev, this film is a cinematic perusal of the contrasts, contradictions and diversity of India. The film has no commentary, but the shots speak for themselves. Just like Indian feature films, this film also has drama and songs, but these are ‘real-life’ rather than conceived specially for this film. The film produces the same effect on the viewers as a month-long visit to India, a sense of having seen everything and a sense of having seen nothing, both at the same time. Shot almost half a century ago, the film is still relevant to the present day 21st century India.
