Ongoing colonization: Addressing systemic violence against Indigenous women
Tuesday, October 15th, 3:00pm until 5:00pm
Lev Bukhman room, 2nd floor SSMU Building, 3480 McTavish Street
Indigenous women are five times more likely to die violently than any other group of women in Canada. Since 1980 over 700 Indigenous women have been murdered or gone missing. Some estimate that the number of missing and murdered women is upward of 2000. Although this issue has been receiving an increased amount of attention over the past few years, it is still left largely un-addressed by mainstream Canadian society. This teach will tell the stories of missing Indigenous women and girls in and around Montreal, Quebec, and offer an overview of colonization and ongoing colonization across Turtle Island and it’s relation to the current situation of violence against Native women in order to orient participants with the issue of systemic violence against Indigenous women providing facts and statistics about this issue. We will address current realities and root causes of ongoing colonization committed on the bodies of Indigenous women, identifying pillars that uphold and perpetuate this violence, making links between ongoing colonization and current environmental exploitation of Indigenous territories. This teach in will give an overview of the organizing and research that has been taking place to address this violence, and the current push to have a public inquiry conducted by the United Nations on violence against Indigenous women in Canada.

Searching for Meaning
Thursday, October 17th, 7:00pm until 9:00pm
Coop la Maison verte,5785 rue Sherbrooke ouest
Searching for Meaning: Are we looking for fulfillment in the right places?
There was a time -- perhaps a mythical time -- when the path to a good and meaningful life seemed pretty straightforward. You grew up, did well in school, found a job, got married. Satisfaction came from your family, neighbours, religion and the knowledge that you were following well-trodden pathways. Now we have choices. We are independent. Arguably, we have access to more technology, information and opportunities than ever before. But at what cost? Despite the privileges we are afforded, depression, anxiety, and addictions appear to be on the rise. Does a sense of meaninglessness and disconnection lie beneath the surface? Why do individuals who have so much still feel compelled to search for something more? Is this a new problem, or an essential part of the human condition? More importantly, is there anything we can do about it? Together, through this public conversation, we will examine the voids we are trying to fill and share the struggles and victories we have each encountered on our personal quests for meaning.

[CULTURE SHOCK KEYNOTE] COLLAGE & CONFLICT: Manifestos on the Politics of Visual Art
Friday, October 18, 7:00pm
Café l'Artère, 7000 avenue du Parc
This years’ keynote address will be delivered by truthoscopic and confrontational collagist and poet Theodore A. Harris presenting work from his forth coming book COLLAGE and CONFLICT: Manifestos on the Politics of Visual Art which deals with the intersection between art and politics
“Harris, for the past decade, has played a crucial role in dressing the concrete walls of Philadelphia with behemoth and colorful murals dedicated to noble Black folks – transforming deso- late blocks into paint-rolled libations to the ancestors. For Harris, each page is a wall, somewhere in the world – beyond North Philly – standing with the signature of his blaz- ing weapon penned across its impenetrable surface.
Harris’ greatness is a consequence of more than just his extraordinary talent. He has employed his collages as flaming weapons, and the themes he explores – capitalism as religion, horned devils with forty-one shots, plungers, nightsticks, and badges, the hypocrisy of US foreign policy, and the nazification of America by an installed administration – demonstrates not only his ability to fire the weapons, but to hit the mark; page after burning page.” – MK Asante Jr, 2004
The talk will be followed with a Q&A with the artist, and accompanied by an art exhibition (“Our Flesh of Flames/Facts on the Ground”).
Please note! Our Flesh of Flames/Facts on the Ground will be on view at l'Artère from Tuesday, October 15th, until Sunday, October 20th!
This venue is wheelchair accessible; however, the bathrooms are not. Childcare and whisper translation will be available. This event is part of the Culture Shock series put on by QPIRG-McGill. (qpirgmcgill.org/culture-shock)

Cirquantique has teamed up with Montreal band "Little Suns" to create a theatrical cabaret with an original musical score. The story begins at the turn of the century, when a chimney sweep accidentally falls from his perch after his distracted eye falls on unrequited love. While being treated for his injuries, the chimney sweep feverishly wanders into a whimsical reverie where he journeys through an abstract un-reality encountering different characters along the way. Through circus, burlesque, dance and music, the show explores various themes in the sexy, eclectic and fun-spirited fashion that Cirquantique is known for.
