What would socialism look like?
Thursday, November 22nd, 7:00pm
School of Community & Public Affairs Students' Association, 2149 Mackay Street

Since the start of the economic crisis, governments around the world have been implementing a deep program of austerity. This has caused a massive backlash amongst workers and youth who have taken to the streets on a scale not seen in 40 years. Millions of people are now rejecting the capitalist system and searching a way out of the current predicament.
With this in mind, the Socialist Fightback Student Association in collaboration
with the Geography Undergraduate Students Society, the School of Community and Public Affairs Student association and La Tendance Marxiste Internationale will be hosting a discussion on what a socialist solution would look like.

UNITED IN ANGER: A HISTORY OF ACT UP
Thursday, November 22nd, 7:00pm until 10:00pm
Concordia University, Room H110

This Quebec premiere screening is a special co-presentation with the HIV/AIDS Lecture Series Concordia. Director Jim Hubbard will be in attendance.
UNITED IN ANGER: A HISTORY OF ACT UP is a unique feature-length documentary that combines startling archival footage that puts the audience on the ground with the activists and the remarkably insightful interviews from the ACT UP Oral History Project to explore ACT UP (the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power) from a grassroots perspective – how a small group of men and women of all races and classes, came together to change the world and save each other’s lives.
The film takes the viewer through the planning and execution of a half dozen exhilarating major actions including Seize Control of the FDA, Stop the Church, and Day of Desperation, with a timeline of many of the other zaps and actions that forced the U.S. government and mainstream media to deal with the AIDS crisis. UNITED IN ANGER reveals the group’s complex culture – meetings, affinity groups, and approaches to civil disobedience mingle with profound grief, sexiness, and the incredible energy of ACT UP.

Conversation: Creativity in the Kitchen
Thursday, November 22nd, 7:00pm
Nüx, 5221 De Maisonneuve West, #401

Creativity in the Kitchen: How do we share the table with food intolerances?
Delicious. Mouthwatering. Succulent. These are all words we use to describe a perfect meal, filled with flavour and enjoyment. But, for those of us faced with food intolerances, these same words are often associated with bloating, stomach pain, fatigue, nasal congestion and worse. These reactionsmay not be life threatening, but they are enough to turn eating outside our own homes into a stressful situation. Through experimentation and guidance from health practitioners, we can cut out the foods that make us sick, but what about family dinners, coffee breaks, dates, meetings and the vast host of other human interactions that often convene over food? Can we still enjoy these communal experiences and not become social pariahs? Is it possible to abide by our limited diets without compromising our emotional well-being? Over the course of this public conversation, we will reflect on our personal encounters with food and explore how we can respect both our intolerances and our human need to share food with others.

JAI BHIM COMRADE - with director Anand Patwardhan in attendance
Saturday, November 24, 7:00pm until 10:00pm
Concordia University, Room H110

After the 1997 police shooting of 10 unarmed Dalit (formerly known as Untouchable) protesters and bystanders in Mumbai’s slums, the community’s rage over their 2,000 years of oppression boils over. For one man, singer, poet and activist, Vilas Ghogre, it’s more than he can bear; filled with despair over the pain and grief of his people, he hangs himself. Compelled by this tragedy, award-winning activist and documentarian Anand Patwardhan focuses his keen lens on the atrocities committed against the Dalits in this magnum opus 14 years in the making, incorporating their voice through their stirring resistance music and poetry. Denied basic human rights for centuries, condemned to clean the filth of the upper caste for pennies a day, then abhorred as lesser beings, the Dalit struggle is deftly counterbalanced by intimate family portraits, moments of inspiration, perseverance and glimpses of a better future.
