Art + Activism II — artistic voices on Québec frontlines
Wednesday, August 21st, 6:00pm until 9:00pm
Le cagibi, 5490 St Laurent Blvd
A panel discussion with artist/activist Shahrzad Arshadi, writer David Austin (Fear of a Black Nation) and writer Sean Mills (The Empire Within) on the relationship between art and social activism in Québec society today and over past generations. Critical reflections on the relationship between the arts and social justice movements.
From diaspora struggles against racism and for liberation, including the Sir George Williams Affair in 1969 and contemporary migrant justice struggles, artists play an important role. Looking to the 2012 Quebec student uprising and back to the Révolution tranquille, art is a central component to the political expression of social movements in Québec society.
As Montreal continues to face a gentrification wave and a major push toward corporate sponsorship of the arts, how will grassroots, socially conscious art be impacted? Join us for a community panel discussion to collectively reflect on these issues and ideas.

Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre (MHMC) is pleased to invite you to the 3rd edition of its Montreal survivor memoirs Book fair on Sunday, August 25, from 1 - 4 p.m., at the MHMC. Take this opportunity to meet Holocaust survivors who will share a part of their history, such as Marguerite Quddus (Cachée) and Michael Kutz (If, by Miracle) who will read excerpts from their memoirs.
Some survivors’ children and grandchildren will present their parents and grandparents memoir. Michael Nehemia will read an excerpt of his grandfather’s book, Benjamin Kujawski, My Long Road to Freedom. For the first time this year, authors of second generation will present their books, inspired by their parents' lives. You will have the chance to hear a survivor’s story told by her daughter, S. Nadja Zajdman (Bent Branches), essayist and short story writer.
Take advantage of this day to meet Holocaust survivors and their descendants, whose lives were marked by their parents' story.
Please note that forms of The Shoah Victims’ Names Recovery Project of Yad Vashem will be available. This is a race against time, before those who remember them are no longer with us.
