The Valhalla Movement

I recently had the pleasure of attending the first tour for the new Vahalla movement Eco-village.The land is a 60-acre area, in La Prarie - about 30 minutes outside of central Montreal.

My partner and I met up with some other folks who had heard about the eco-village projects at a cafe in Plateau, and after the carpools were organized, we drove to the nearby residence where the core members and founders live, about 2 minutes drive from the land.

We sat together in the large driveway, as Mark, one of the founding members, led a presentation on the founding concepts, the organization, the timeline and the projects.

Starting small, the Valhalla project has a mandate of expansion and resource sharing. They are starting this current farming project with a distinct desire to help people to create their own both here in Quebec, but also worldwide.

The first project is an earthship inspired greenhouse, which has been creatively funded through a kickstarter.com venture, and which will be built in part by Micheal Reynolds of www.garbagewarrior.com, one of the first designers of the earthship, and his team from Taos, New Mexico.

Future plans include the building of a community centre (also earthship style) which will also act as a headquarters for future green builds with Micheal Reynolds. Reynolds will be coming to Montreal on June 15th to give a presentation about the earthship movement and future projects with The Valhalla movement.

After the introduction, we headed over for a 20 minute walk to the site, to check out the potential. The area is huge, and mainly undeveloped, having been used as farmland for conventionally grown produce. You can see a pile of tiles being collected for the greenhouse, and the first paths for an epic flower garden.

Over the next few years, the collective wants to build around 80 earthship homes on the land, as well as an enormous garden and food forest of divese heirloom varieties, organically and sustainably grown.

At this point, they are looking to get everyone and anyone involved who would like to contribute in a variety of ways. While there are currently no options for living on the site, or renting a home, there will be opportunities for those who can commute from the city, as well as a small campground for those who want to get involved in a closer way during the summer months.

I found the presentation to be clear and inspiring, and I`m really looking forward to watching to project develop! Check it out for yourself at one of their future tours or presentations.
