CURLERS & CONDOMS: GRASSROOTS PREVENTION THEN AND NOW Film Screening and Lecture by DiAna DiAna
Thursday, March 21, 7pm
Room H-110 of the Henry F. Hall Building
The 2012-2013 Concordia University Community Lecture Series on HIV/AIDS, in partnership with the Simone de Beauvoir Institute and FASA, is pleased to present the fourth and final event of the series:
FREE. DiAna DiAna is an African-American South Carolina-based grassroots prevention activist and hairstylist who became the subject of the American documentary film DiAna’s Hair Ego in 1991. She was one of the early pioneers of AIDS education, having begun prevention work in her salon in 1986 by handing out condoms to her clients, soon after which she founded the nonprofit South Carolina AIDS Education Network (SCAEN). In 1989, DiAna joined forces with ACT UP to stage a State House rally for the rights of people with HIV/AIDS. A filmmaker borrowed footage from the rally and from DiAna’s salon to make the short film DiAna’s Hair Ego, which was honored both by the American Film Institute and internationally. Opening with a screening of this epochal short video, DiAna will reflect on her experiences as a prevention activist and safer sex educator, examine the impact of grassroots organizations, and speak about her current work within her community.

Resilience Symposium
20-22 March 2013
Wednesday, March 20, 7:30-9:00 p.m.
Radical Pedagogy and Academic Freedom/Resilience
Dr. Norman Cornett was a sessional instructor in religious studies at McGill University from 1992 until his dismissal in May 2007 for reasons that were never provided, despite an outcry raised in Montreal by some of his former students, academics, and public intellectuals. No one, including Dr. Cornett, disputes that his teaching methods are unorthodox. Journalist Peggy Curran, in a June 2007 article in the Montreal Gazette, reports that Cornett “had an epiphany 15 years ago when a student … had a meltdown at his desk” due to an upcoming test. In response, he “vowed to ‘find a better way’ by creating a ‘no fear’ zone and putting ‘delight back into studies’, … banished essays and exams in favour of ‘dialogic sessions’ where students exchange ideas on human rights issues, death, music, science and art.”
Thursday, March 21, 7:30-9:00 p.m.
Dialogic Pedagogy: Nicholas Howells’ Crowfoot and Naomi McIlwraith’s kiyâm
In this event, the audience and their facilitator, Ronning Centre Distinguished Visiting Fellow Norman Cornett, will explore Crowfoot, a piano composition by Nicholas Howells performed by Dr. Milton Schlosser, and kiyâm, a book of poetry by Naomi McIlwraith. The “dialogic method”, in which the audience experiences and responds to works of art in a variety of novel ways -- see http://haveyouexperienced.wordpress.com/about/ -- will be employed throughout this event. Augustana alumni Howells and McIlwraith as well as Augustana’s Professor Schlosser will not be present but, as the dialogic method demands, will respond in person to the insights gained via the method in the final session of the Resilience Symposium on Friday afternoon.
Friday, March 22, 9:00-10:00 a.m.
Resilience in the Classroom
Professor and aboriginal activist Janice Makokis and Ronning Centre Distinguished Visiting Fellow Norman Cornett will engage the many questions of resilience in the classroom. In particular, they will address how instructors can both nurture and stifle the spiritual, psychological, and intellectual resilience of their students and themselves.
Friday, March 22, 10:30-11:45 a.m.
Resilience and Idle No More
Blue Quills Professor Janice Makokis, one of the young leaders of the Idle No More movement, will address issues surrounding this new and influential cause: its foundations, its people, and its objectives.
Friday, March 22, 12:00-1:15 p.m.
Lunch & Learn with Métis Poet and Alumna Naomi McIlwraith
In this event, sponsored by Augustana’s Alumni & Special Events Office, Métis poet and Augustana English grad Naomi McIlwraith will discuss her roots and the inspiration behind kiyâm, a collection of her poems published by Athabasca University Press in 2012. Augustana students may attend free with their OneCard. Community members and Augustana staff may attend for the price of $5 (to cover the cost of the lunch).
Friday, March 22, 2:15-4:15 p.m.
A Celebration of Artistic Resilience
This wrap-up event of the Resilience Symposium will feature Nicholas Howells’ Crowfoot, an innovative and engaging piano composition inspired by his Métis roots and performed by Augustana’s own Milton Schlosser, and Naomi McIlwraith reading from kiyâm, her recently published book of poetry. These performances will be followed by questions from the audience and the final component of the dialogic exploration of their work: a dialogic interview of the artists involved by Dr. Norman Cornett.

Come by the Foulab Hackerspace and we'll show you what's involved. Expect: rad power point slides, weyrd 50s instructional videos, info on the magik of magnets and also: treats.
The Power Up! bike generator was built by a group of six crafty ne'er-do-wells with little to know previous knowledge of electricity, technology or magik and this workshop is the outcome of their work together.

Saturday, March 23, 8:30pm
Bain Mathieu, 2915 rue Ontario
Bad Uncle presents “A Surgeon’s Lament”, with generous support from the Canadian Council for the Arts. The show makes its Montreal debut in support of Bad Uncle’s new studio album, accompanied by a Cirquantique cabaret with the city’s finest circus and burlesque performers.
Having been performed to awestruck audiences at festivals Folk Sale and Carmagnole, Bad Uncle brings with them, fire, lights, and decadence to dark, mysterious evening.
The rock opus will be supported by live circus and burlesque to recount the story of a surgeon’s return from the grave in a desperate search for love. Unable to find his mate, he creates his ideal, perfect love creature. Their unholy tie gives birth to horrific creatures who unintentionally instigate war between the living and the dead.
