WINTER, GO AWAY! (ЗИМА, УХОДИ!) - Canadian premiere with director in attendance
Monday, March 3, 7:00pm until 10:00pm
Concordia University, Room H110

Join us for this special screening on the anniversary of Putin's election. Director Askold Kurov will be in attendance. Co-presented in collaboration with Amnesty International Montreal and DOC Quebec.
Ten young directors did not part from their cameras for two months. The result was a chronicle of Russia's winter protests - a chronicle of those who make the political climate and those who are dissatisfied with the makers. We see people, their faces, their conversations, rallies, victories and defeats ahead of the presidential election. A living camera interacts with living heroes.
In the late winter of 2012, Russia found itself at a crossroads. Vladimir Putin seeks a third, extended term as president, a position he “left” earlier to serve as prime minister. The continued consolidation of power by his party revives painful memories of the authoritarian past and eradicates the possibility of political neutrality. An independent newspaper sends 10 young filmmakers into this crisis to document two months worth of back-room meetings, large-scale demonstrations, electioneering gimmicks and spontaneous acts of dissent, covering all strata of society. The resulting film eschews prepared remarks from “experts,” instead offering a powerful and direct survey of the frantic political moment. With hand-held immediacy, Winter, Go Away! captures the passion and frustration of the opposition, the cavalier callousness of the established order and the confusion and paranoia of those caught in between.

Conversation: Density Interrupted - What do wild spaces in the city mean to us?
Tuesday, March 5th, 7:00pm until 9:00pm
Arts Café, 201 Fairmount Ave. W
In recent years, gentrification of the Mile End has altered the local landscape to the point that, for some, it is unrecognizable. However, on the East end of St. Viateur, only a few blocks from the hip new hangouts and the sky rocketing rents, one place has remained mostly unchanged: Le Champ des Possibles. Although it is being encroached upon by an ever-growing number of condos, this meadow endures as one of Montreal’s very last ‘wild spaces.’ Members of the community who use the space for gatherings, to grow vegetables, to install public art, and to ‘get away’ from the noise of the city, advocate that the wildness of this area is worth preserving. This begs the question: what does it mean to have unplanned ‘wild space’ in an urban environment? Why do people value it so much? Can it remain ‘wild’ as it becomes formalized, protected and popular? We invite you to join in this public conversation where we will share our personal experiences of the Champ des Possibles and explore what this kind of space represents for us.

Conversation: Inquiring Identity
Thursday, March 7, 7:00pm until 9:00pm                                                                                             Coopérative des Bons Voisins, 247a Chemin du Bord-du-Lac, Pointe-Claire QC
Inquiring Identity: Who am I if I am never just one thing?
Throughout history, identity has been used as the basis for conflict, discrimination, affiliation, and privilege. From wars, to educational systems, to legal rights, identity informs both how we understand ourselves, and how we understand our place in the world. This conversation will begin with a literary metissage that braids together three personal narratives on the topic of identity and aims to provoke questions such as: Does identity come from our actions or does it guide our actions? Is identity in flux and/or multiple? What privileges come from certain identities? Who gets to decide our identity? Together, we will explore our slippery encounters with self and society by reflecting on the nexus between our internally-imposed definitions of identity and those that others impose upon us.

STATUS QUO? THE UNFINISHED BUSINESS OF FEMINISM IN CANADA - with director
Friday, March 8, 7:00pm until 10:00pm
Concordia University, Room H110

Join us on International Women's Day for this Montreal premiere. Director Karen Cho, Bridget Tolley (FSIS), Cecilia Diocasson (PWC-Q) & Barbara Legault (RebELLEs) will be in attendance. Co-presented with Justice for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Families of Sisters in Spirit & Philippine Women's Centre of Quebec.
Feminism has shaped the society we live in. But just how far has it brought us, and how relevant is it today? Status Quo? asks these questions and uncovers provocative - at times shocking - answers about the evolution of women's equality in Canada. Interweaving a wealth of dynamic archival material with startling contemporary stories, the film situates the vibrant Canadian women's movement in its history-making context. In 1967 the landmark Toyal Commission on the Status of Women made recommendations to address the inequalities faced by women. Now, Status Quo? zeroes in on key concerns such as violence against women, access to abortion, and universal childcare, asking how much progress we have truly made on these issues. Status Quo? is crucial viewing for every Canadian, especially those unfamiliar with the vital achievements of the feminist movement. This striking, in-depth documentary pays homage to Canada's feminist forerunners and raises important questions about where and how we should move on from here.
