CALL ME KUCHU - Quebec premiere with speakers
Monday, February 25th, 7:00pm until 10:00pm
Concordia University, Room H110

A Black History Month screening, in memory and honour of David Kato. With guest speakers in attendance. Co-presented with the 2110 Centre for Gender Advocacy.
With unprecedented access, CALL ME KUCHU depicts the last year in the life of a courageous, quick-witted and steadfast man whose wisdom and achievements were not fully recognized until after his death. While heartbreaking, the documentary traces a narrative that takes the viewer beyond the chronicle of victimization depicted in international news media: it tells the nuanced story of David and Kampala’s kuchus as they work to change their fate. A story told in his words, David Kato’s final testimony lives on in this film, while his work is continued by the fellow activists he left behind.

MANIFESTATION NATIONALE DU 26 FÉVRIER : Au Sommet de l'indexation, manifestons pour une éducation libre, accessible et gratuite!
Tuesday, February 26th, 2:00pm
Square Victoria

At the indexation Summit, come demonstrate for a free and accessible education!
6 months ago, we stopped the tuition hike.
Now, we must defend what was won during the strike. The status quo is being threatened by the indexation of tuition fees, a perpetual tuition hike that would affirm the vision of post-secondary education as a marketable product in our society.
In order for our vision of university to prevail, we must mobilize. We must continue to struggle and fight with a new sense of strength. On February 26, at the indexation summit, demonstrate for free and accessible education!

Cinema Politica McGill presents: The Bicycle
Tuesday, February 26th, 6:00pm
Leacock 15 855 Sherbrooke West

Pax Chingawale pedals his bicycle over 20 km a day, visiting his neighbours from house to house in Zomba District, southern Malawi, Africa. Pax works with traditional healers who are influential at the local level yet often contribute unwittingly to the spread of the disease. He bikes around in search of the abandoned and the ill while monitoring the progress of those whose lives are being saved by ARVs (Anti Retro-Virals), a life-extending drug treatment.
Pax is not a doctor or nurse. He's a retired government auditor who volunteers with Canada's Dignitas International, helping to create a model for making ARV drugs accessible to the world's most vulnerable: those who live far from hospitals and any formal medical care. . It is the sobering yet inspirational story of how local communities can join up with global medical expertise to battle the world's deadliest pandemic - and win.

Rio +20: What Future do We Want? Will International Forums Save the Planet?
Tuesday, February 26th, 6:00pm until 8:00pm
Samuel Bronfman Center

The School of Community and Public Affairs at Concordia University in Montreal is hosting a panel discussion on the Rio + 20 summit.
The Rio + 20 summit was held in Rio de Janeiro in June 2012. Supporters of the summit viewed it as a success that provided opportunities to discuss and implement plans on how to move towards sustainable development, while opponents questioned the usefulness of large scale forums. Opponents also critiqued the absence of concrete measures arising from these events. What can be learned from this process? What is an effective way of making progress on these issues? Panelists will have the opportunity to exchange their views and engage in discussion with the audience.
Panelists include:
Handy Acosta Cuellar- UNEP Regional Youth advisor, Sauvé Scholar
Sebastion Jodoin- Founder, One Justice Project
    Etianne Leblanc-Journaliste à Radio-Canada
The discussion will be moderated by Desire McGraw- Executive Director, Jeanne Sauvé Foundation
There will be refreshments served after the debate.

Anarchism and Hope: An interactive workshop on dreams, desire, struggle, and the cold reality we live in
Tuesday, February 26th, 6:30pm
La Belle Époque, 1984 rue Wellington

Have you ever stopped to ask yourself the question as an anarchist or a revolutionary "what gives you hope"? What keeps you motivated to fight for a better world? What stops you from throwing in the towel? This workshop comes from a belief that anarchists are perhaps the most hopeful and the most cynical people in society at the same time, yet we rarely openly discuss the notion of hope.
This workshop will be an interactive discussion on several questions surrounding hope. It is based on a writing project I started in 2010 in the aftermath of the G20, a particularly dark and hopeless period for many of our comrades, and continues through other periods of joyous resistance such as the Arab spring and the student strike. It is also based on several interviews with anarchist and anti-authoritarian organizers on hope. We will also explore what other anarchist writers have said about hope.
Some questions and thoughts we will discuss are;
    -What gives us hope?
-Is hope liberal bullshit? Religious bullshit? What does hope mean in the age of Barack Obama's "hope"?
-What would an anarchist vision of hope mean?
-How can we maintain hope without negating the overwhelming oppression in this world?
-How can we ground our hope in our day to day realities of struggle?
Workshop facilitated by Aaron Lakoff. Aaron is an anarchist who thinks a lot about hope, and is fighting for a world with less borders and more bagels.

Community Well-being Talking Circle
Tuesday, February 26th, 7:00pm
Le Milieu, 1251 rue Robin

I'll be hosting a talking circle about Centre-Sud community life at le Milieu (1251 Rue Robin, métro Beaudry) this Tuesday, February 26th at 7pm.
Circles work like normal conversation except that we pass an object to show whose turn it is to speak. Whoever has the object can pass, wait, or speak, and everyone is to listen. Circles are very simple, but for some reason, more powerful than normal conversation.
A few good friends have moved away from me recently. One question I'll personally be bringing to the circle is wondering what can we do when we don't feel we have enough community? What are the "keys to the city" that open doors of human contact in the Centre-Sud?
If you're coming, coming at 7 would be very much appreciated.
If you have any questions, please feel free! Last time everyone was passively bilingual and we all spoke in English or French depending on our preference.

Freeing Silvia Baraldini (film screening)

Friday, March 1, 7:00pm
La Belle Époque, 1984 rue Wellington

This film documents the life of former U.S. political prisoner Silvia Baraldini. Silvia moved to the U.S. as a child, coming of age at the height of the Civil Rights Movement. In the 1970's when hundreds of politically minded people folded back into the comforts of American society, Silvia deepened her commitment to revolutionary anti-imperialist struggle, becoming a national leader of the May 19th Communist Organization. In 1982 she was arrested by the FBI and sentenced to 43 years in prison for her involvement in various acts of resistance, including the liberation of former Black Panther Assata Shakur from prison. She was additionally charged with criminal contempt of court and given another three years for refusing to answer questions to a Grand Jury investigating the Puerto Rican Independence Movement.
Following her arrest, Silvia was one of six women incarcerated at the experimental "High Security Unit" at Lexington prison in Kentucky, a unit established to see if intense isolation and sensory deprivation torture could be used to force political prisoners to renounce their beliefs. While in Lexington, Silvia became ill with uterine cancer; it was only after the unit was closed as a result of protests and legal challenges that she was provided with medical care, eventually undergoing two surgeries and radiation therapy.
In 1999, Silvia was transferred to Italy to serve the remainder of her sentence; she was released on September 26, 2006. Despite the torturous conditions she had been subjected to, she never repudiated her beliefs and never provided the state with any information.
