Guerilla Teach-In: Idle No More

Join us in doing guerilla one-minute teach-ins for the Idle No More Day of Solidarity! What do we mean by guerilla teach-ins? We mean find a place that people might not expect to hear some useful information -- maybe a metro stop...or a metro CAR! Maybe the food court in a mall. Teach a one-minute lesson on a variety of topics (sample: What is Bill C-45? What is the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People?) and then disappear to teach again!
We're combining flash mobs and teach-ins to create a new experience that will hopefully inspire people to find out more about Idle No More, indigenous rights, and history! We have a Google Doc that is being prepped with some quick points you can use to build your teach-in. We suggest that people do this in pairs: one person to teach and one person to video and provide moral support.
If you have a topic you would particularly like to teach, build your own one-minute teach-in! Keep it SHORT and SIMPLE...get in, teach, get out. We are not trying to make people angry or be really antagonistic. We are trying to convey short, important information to people who may not have heard it already.

Join us for the screening of this moving yet disturbing doc, chronicling the struggles of the aboriginal community whose plight sparked the Idle No More movement. Director Alanis Obomsawin will be in attendance for a Q&A after the film.
On October 28,2011, Theresa Spence, chief of the Attawapiskat First Nation, declared a state of emergency in her community in northern Ontario.
The housing conditions on the reserve made international headlines and revealed the often hidden realities of extreme poverty in one of the world`s wealthiest countries. A media storm erupted in Canada as the plight of the isolated First Nation captivated the country. However, what was largely absent from the genuine concern and political finger-pointing portrayed in the press were the voices of the people of Attawapiskat themselves. Alanis Obomsawin journeys to Attawapiskat on the shores of the Kattawapiskak River and introduces us to the residents of the beleaguered community.
Through the filmmaker`s gentle, yet unflinchingly honest lens, we are taken inside the overcrowded homes and make-shift shacks as the residents speak of their hardships while revealing inspiring hope for the future.

This week's theme will be Visual Arts in Resistance and Education
Come teach and learn in a safe, non-hierarchical environment what it means to use creative actions for positive social change! This discussion group is our chance to share questions, concerns, principles, history, and theories regarding tactics and methods which foster creativity and imagination within a social/environmental justice framework. However, this is also a tactical laboratory - we will have the opportunity to practice these skills in participant-led rehearsals and experimental scenarios.
Potential topics include: storytelling for change; transformative theatre; freeskool; clowning/bouffon; street art/imagery; radical cheerleading; culture jamming; etc. Action planning will ideally come out of ongoing discussions.

Manifestons ensemble, le 30 janvier, à l'appel de la Coalition opposée à la tarification et à la privatisation des services publics.
L'an dernier, ce sont plus de 50 000 familles qui ont été débranchées par Hydro-Québec. Pourtant, le Parti Québécois a tout de même choisi d'aller de l'avant avec le projet libéral de hausse des tarifs d’électricité. N'est-il pas étonnant de voir qu'après la plus grande mobilisation sociale des dernières années, le nouveau gouvernement n'ait pas saisi que nous réclamions un Québec plus juste et progressiste? En effet, celui-ci s'est empressé de reculer sur presque toutes ses promesses les unes après les autres. Le retrait de la taxe santé, l'abolition de la hausse des tarifs d'électricité ou la hausse des redevances minières sont autant de mesures promises qui sont absentes du premier budget péquiste. Plutôt que d'agir sur ce qui avait été promis, le gouvernement Marois a plutôt choisi de nous concocter un énième budget libéral sous le signe de compressions budgétaires et de mesures fiscales régressives.

Didja want to make some awesome fiber art using yarn and thread but haven't found the time or inspiration to do it yet?

Thursday bring your supplies and your buddies because we're going to be having a good old fashioned KNITTING CIRCLE (but also crochet, embroidery and all that jazz), right here in the Greenhouse complete with TEA and SNACKIES!

Film Screening & Group Discussion: Two Spirits

Two Spirits tells compelling stories about traditions that were once widespread among the indigenous cultures of North America. The film explores the contemporary lives and history of Native two-spirit people — who combine the traits of both men and women with qualities that are also unique to individuals who express multiple genders. The Navajo believe that to maintain harmony, there must be a balanced interrelationship between the feminine and the masculine within the individual, in families, in the culture, and in the natural world. Two Spirits reveals how these beliefs are expressed in a natural range of gender diversity. For the first time on film, it examines the Navajo concept of nádleehí, “one who constantly transforms.”
In Navajo culture, there are four genders; some indigenous cultures recognize more. Native activists working to renew their cultural heritage adopted the English term “two-spirit” as a useful shorthand to describe the entire spectrum of gender and sexual expression that is better and more completely described in their own languages. The film demonstrates how they are revitalizing two-spirit traditions and once again claiming their rightful place within their tribal communities.

We are happy to announce the first of our tasting series of 2013! Together with our whisky astute friends at Ouidram (www.ouidram.com), we will take a journey through the international world of whisky. Informative, delicious and fun, we will learn all about the art of whisky production, the effect of local landscapes on the taste and, finally, understand the difference between “whisky”, “whiskey” and “Scotch”, single malts and blends.

This screening is a special co-presentation with the Concordia HIV/AIDS Lecture Series, and both the director Mia Donovan and Lara Roxx will be in attendance.
In the spring of 2004, 21-year old Lara Roxx left her hometown of Montreal and headed to L.A to try to make tons of cash in the adult entertainment industry. Within two months of working in this industry she contracted the most virulent form of HIV while performing sex in front of the camera.
Inside Lara Roxx is a feature-length-documentary about the events leading up to that scene and the years after it- it is about the adult movie industry and its impact on a young life. Lara Roxx, as she will come to be known in the sex industry, has been irrevocably changed by her work in porn. Miss Roxx’s story created a media sensation, but it’s when the media hype dies that Inside Lara Roxx begins – in a psychiatric ward in Montreal.

Le Ras-le-bol est une initiative des étudiant/es de l'UQAM qui ont trouvé pertinent d'aller de l'avant afin d'instaurer une soupe populaire à l'UQAM. L’idée de la soupe populaire qui bénéficierait aux étudiant/es a été longtemps soulevée dans notre université. Depuis des années, plusieurs groupes étudiants ont essayé de l’instaurer une bonne fois pour toute. Malheureusement, les temps sont durs pour la bonne volonté de l’administration uqamienne et les projets ont été refusés, malgré l’existence de locaux et de cuisines inutilisées et donc libres.
De la bonne bouffe, du beau monde, un beau projet, venez le supporter!

Thursday bring your supplies and your buddies because we're going to be having a good old fashioned KNITTING CIRCLE (but also crochet, embroidery and all that jazz), right here in the Greenhouse complete with TEA and SNACKIES!

Film Screening & Group Discussion: Two Spirits

Two Spirits tells compelling stories about traditions that were once widespread among the indigenous cultures of North America. The film explores the contemporary lives and history of Native two-spirit people — who combine the traits of both men and women with qualities that are also unique to individuals who express multiple genders. The Navajo believe that to maintain harmony, there must be a balanced interrelationship between the feminine and the masculine within the individual, in families, in the culture, and in the natural world. Two Spirits reveals how these beliefs are expressed in a natural range of gender diversity. For the first time on film, it examines the Navajo concept of nádleehí, “one who constantly transforms.”
In Navajo culture, there are four genders; some indigenous cultures recognize more. Native activists working to renew their cultural heritage adopted the English term “two-spirit” as a useful shorthand to describe the entire spectrum of gender and sexual expression that is better and more completely described in their own languages. The film demonstrates how they are revitalizing two-spirit traditions and once again claiming their rightful place within their tribal communities.

Whiskies of the World

We are happy to announce the first of our tasting series of 2013! Together with our whisky astute friends at Ouidram (www.ouidram.com), we will take a journey through the international world of whisky. Informative, delicious and fun, we will learn all about the art of whisky production, the effect of local landscapes on the taste and, finally, understand the difference between “whisky”, “whiskey” and “Scotch”, single malts and blends.

This screening is a special co-presentation with the Concordia HIV/AIDS Lecture Series, and both the director Mia Donovan and Lara Roxx will be in attendance.
In the spring of 2004, 21-year old Lara Roxx left her hometown of Montreal and headed to L.A to try to make tons of cash in the adult entertainment industry. Within two months of working in this industry she contracted the most virulent form of HIV while performing sex in front of the camera.
Inside Lara Roxx is a feature-length-documentary about the events leading up to that scene and the years after it- it is about the adult movie industry and its impact on a young life. Lara Roxx, as she will come to be known in the sex industry, has been irrevocably changed by her work in porn. Miss Roxx’s story created a media sensation, but it’s when the media hype dies that Inside Lara Roxx begins – in a psychiatric ward in Montreal.

Le Ras-le-bol est une initiative des étudiant/es de l'UQAM qui ont trouvé pertinent d'aller de l'avant afin d'instaurer une soupe populaire à l'UQAM. L’idée de la soupe populaire qui bénéficierait aux étudiant/es a été longtemps soulevée dans notre université. Depuis des années, plusieurs groupes étudiants ont essayé de l’instaurer une bonne fois pour toute. Malheureusement, les temps sont durs pour la bonne volonté de l’administration uqamienne et les projets ont été refusés, malgré l’existence de locaux et de cuisines inutilisées et donc libres.
De la bonne bouffe, du beau monde, un beau projet, venez le supporter!

The Montreal International Documentary Festival (RIDM) is launching the second year of its Docville series with «Photographic Memory» by American filmmaker Ross McElwee («Sherman’s March»). The documentary’s Quebec premiere will take place on Thursday, January 31 at 7 p.m. at Cinéma Excentris. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the director via Skype.
