- Shade Gardening: Tracey Arial, a Verdun resident who has created an oasis under two silver maple trees, will lead a one-hour discussion about the possibilities for gardening in the shade. The three-part conversation will cover location, design and recommended species. Do you hope to create beauty, enhance ecology, grow food or manipulate scent? Are you the type who likes to continually tinker in the garden or do you prefer to let things take care of themselves as much as possible? Are you trying to cover up an ugly spot or grow lots of produce for food? Does your plan include attracting birds or butterflies? Join us for a conversation about the possibilities and struggles of growing things in urban neighbourhoods.
- Balcony Gardening with Bernard: What grows easily on the third floor? Everything you wanted to know about gardening on balconies and how to grow vegetables even if you don’t have a backyard. Planning, tools, techniques, tricks and what to avoid.
- Backyard Gardening and DIY Projects: Join Sheena Swirlz of www.radicalmontreal.com for a workshop on accessible, creative, organic backyard gardening. Lots of info on D.I.Y. upcycling projects and grassroots ways to empower oneself.
- Legal Aspects of Using Unused or Underused Land: Come join François Vienneau, local gardening enthusiast and musician, for a discussion on the joys, trials and tribulations of transforming vacant lots, church yards and the like into gardens and convivial spaces. François will share the history of some of the gardens in his neighbourhood (Jardin de la liberté, Jardin des citoyens, Jardin St-Charles, Jardin St-Gabriel) and will talk about the rules and regulations and strategies to finance such projects.
