Sight and Sound Festival 2014 : SCIENCE FACTION
May 20 - May 25, 12:00pm to May 25 at 9:00pm
Eastern Bloc, 7240 Clark
This year, the theme is “Science Faction.” From May 20th to 25th, we will be exploring the world of science fiction – marginal legalities, mutating futures, human-machine meltdown, radical cyborgs, post-genetic interfaces, transformative bodies, insurgent futures...
Can we observe the power of the imaginary on our world? Can we conceptualize and give form to these upheavals of change? Science Faction will be a dizzying and multifaceted discovery of a world undergoing profound change. Science Faction is about fear of the unknown; but also, because, inarguably, the idea of communicating with otherworldly beings or robots overpowering humans in a dystopian futurist society are images forever embedded in the consciousness of everyday people, Science Faction is about the sheer power of the imaginary.
With Science Faction, we ask the artist to suggest their rendition of a mutant future, their idea of a radical cyborg, their interpretation of a human-machine meltdown. And, we ask the spectator to embrace the marginal legalities and othered ontologies of those visions put forth.

Radical Skills: Demystifying Finances for Community Organizations and Informal Collectives
Thursday, May 22nd, 6:00pm - 8:00pm
1500 de Maisonneuve O., suite 204
You have wonderful ideas - but you need money, and you need to know how to manage it? Unfortunately, your algebra teacher didn't include even the simplest budgeting skills in their curriculum. No fear - this workshop will teach you the basics and get you started, and will even include some cheat sheets for you to use in your current or upcoming projects!
This workshop will cover the basics of budgeting for ongoing collectives and/or one-time events. Amongst others, we'll learn to operate within a budget, and we'll talk about financial decision-making, and fundraising. We will be sharing skills and strategies, but we also want to have a discussion about how we deal with money while keeping our goals in sight-- particularly for community organizations and other informal collectives.
All are welcome - whether you are currently working on finances or not!

The Riot Grrrl Band Off - DRAW
Thursday, May 22nd, 8:00pm
Cabaret Playhouse, 5656 Du Parc Ave
We waited a whole year and now it's time to form the bands for the RIOT GRRRL BAND OFF - Round 4!!
Bring your friends, your sisters, your lovers and your kitties. let's riot!
How it works:
you put a paper with your name in a hat, as we draw the names we form 5 bands. after that, as a group we agree on the bands we are gonna cover. bands have a month to practice and on June 28th they play a show at Il Motore to raise funds for Rock Camp for Girls Montreal!
You don't have to know how to play an instrument nor have the instrument at home. We all help each other out and teach each other how to play the songs. This is a safe space to make mistakes, sing out of tune. It's a safe space to enjoy yourselves and have fun!
If you won't be there in person send an email to heycarolfernandes@gmail.com and I'll put your name in the hat. But be advised that there are only 30 spots and priority will be given to people who attend the draw in person, unless you CANNOT be present (you don't have to disclosure your reason as long as you tell me you have one). That's based on our experience on previous editions where people who didn't show up for the draw ended up not committing and leaving their bandmates in a shitty situation.
5$ - 10$ sliding scale (PWYC) an official Rock Camp for Girls fundraiser

Global March Against Monsanto - Marche Mondiale Contre Monsanto
START : Saturday, May 24th, 2pm Square Dorchester
END : Around 4 h Parc Jeanne Mance for picnik GMO FREE
While worldwide indignation shakes governments, let us unite to show that people refuse the dictates of a few multinationals that sell out our lives and nature. We, the citizens, call for the end of monopolies on our food, we refuse GMOs, and more want to give our support to those who offer alternatives, responsible and environmentally friendly.
The march against Monsanto is a friendly family event that seeks not to disturb the order or to challenge the authorities: it is only to draw attention to the threats to our food system, from our fields to our plates. The stranglehold of agribusiness companies like Monsanto on our agriculture is very worrying, especially as our governments are complicit in our loss of autonomy to these giants.
This event is LEGAL since it is a fundamental right of citizens to express their opinions.
The subject IS to raise awareness on the need to turn our agriculture in a sustainable direction and must denounce the practices and companies like Monsanto poisoning our health and environment.
Come many and many to this event FESTIVE, FAMILY AND SAFE .
END: THE MARCH WILL END at 4pm in Jeanne Mance Park for a GMO-free pic-nic to forge links between protesters and raise awareness and increase the movement!
