Event series: A Critical History of the Police
Monday, January 20th, 7:00pm
La Belle Époque, 1984 rue Wellington
In this event series, we will explore the notion of 'policing', and we will attempt to chart the history, development, and current manifestations of the police. Focusing on North America, but keeping in mind other contexts, some points of inquiry will be:
- To where can we trace the origins of the police?
- What functions do the police carry out? In what way, and under what conditions, have these evolved?
- How have developments in surveillance technologies affected police strategies for order, control, and crime prevention?
- The role of police in the suppression of social movements
- The police as an autonomous political entity
This group will meet every three weeks. The first meetup will be Monday, January 20, at 7 pm. Suggested reading: Our Enemies in Blue (Chapters 1 and 2). Copies of the readings will be available at La Belle Époque two weeks prior.

Crystal Lameman & Garth Lenz: Tar Sands Exposed - A Speakers Tour in Montreal
Sunday, January 26, 2:00pm
Maison du développement durable, 50, rue Sainte-Catherine Ouest
The Tar Sands of Alberta are one of the most environmentally damaging projects ever undertaken. Production, transportation and use of oil sands are unacceptable due to their direct impact on air, land, water and public health. The risk is even greater due to the acceleration of climate change associated with this extreme form of energy. This industrial project is also harming Indigenous communities: the Mikisew Cree First Nation, the Beaver Lake Cree Nation and the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation are faced with an increasing rate of cancer due to the contamination of their water and territories by toxins, and are seeing their ancestral lands destroyed by the operations and spills from the Tar Sands.
The Tar Sands Speakers Tour offers a way to further educate and mobilize the general public around this significant threat to Canada and Quebec. Fossil fuel extraction threatens front-line communities, and our health and land are jeopardized by pipelines, refineries, and climate change. This event aims to create an intimate conversation with individuals directly affected by tar sands development, and those working to stop it. The power of these first hand storytellers moves the issue from the abstract to the concrete, and compels the audience to take action.
Three speakers, with different perspectives, will share their stories.
See http://www.thetarsandstrial.ca/ for more information about this unprecedented constitutional challenge against the Albertan and Canadian government.
**For more information about the tour, check out 350 Maine's website: http://www.350maine.org/tar_sands_speakers_tour*
